Hot Pink Flamingos: Stories of Hope in a Changing Sea
Exhibit Opens March 29, 2010

Amazing animals will capture hearts and minds when our newest special exhibition, "Hot Pink Flamingos: Stories of Hope in a Changing Sea," takes wing on March 29, 2010. You'll gain a new perspective on global climate change through its impacts on the ocean—and the lives of tropical wading birds, sea turtles, jellies, penguins and coral reef animals.
Animals of the World
You'll journey through seven galleries that weave together stories about how climate change is affecting ocean animals in different ways.
"Hot Pink Flamingos" features many species new to the Aquarium. You'll explore coastal wetlands that are home to gangly Chilean flamingoes, white and scarlet ibises, roseate spoonbills, cattle egrets and American bitterns. In other live exhibits, you'll find rainbow-colored tropical fishes, intricate corals, tropical jellies and young sea turtles.
These and Magellanic penguins—survivors from a group of South American birds that washed ashore, starving when they had to swim far offshore to find food that was once plentiful in the cold, plankton-rich coastal waters—will put living faces on the story of climate change and its impacts on the ocean.
Climate and the Ocean
There is compelling evidence that our environment is suffering at the hands of global climate change, and that greenhouse gases from human activities are accelerating the pace of change.
For most people, the story ends at the shore. Few are talking about the effects of climate change on the other 72 percent—our ocean.
"Hot Pink Flamingos" tells the story of how climate change is affecting ocean life. And it offers new sources of hope in the stories of people and communities who are fighting climate change, and making a difference.
The exhibit does something more: It invites you to join with people around the world who are taking small but significant steps to slow the climate crisis, protecting ocean wildlife—and ourselves.
