Hide a Ray

Where can I hide?River rays blend into the bottom of the Amazon River with their amazing variety of camouflage markings.

Animals that use camouflage (colors and shapes that help an organism to blend with the background) make it difficult for predators to detect and prey upon them. Can you find a "hiding" place for these river rays where they blend in with their surroundings?

Materials
  • Colored pencils, crayons or markers
  • Copy of the ray activity sheetPDF
  • Scissors
  • Transparent tape
Instructions - Activity 1
1. Print out the activity sheet. Cut out the river rays in the photographs.
2. Find a "hiding" place for the rays where they blend in with their surroundings. Don't hide them under or behind things. Keep them in plain sight but against a background where they are hard to see. Then have someone else try to find them.
Instructions - Activity 2
1. Use colored pencils, markers or crayons to color the rays to look like different surfaces in your house, someplace outside, or to blend in to the page of an old magazine.
2. Cut the rays out and stick them to various surfaces where their color and pattern make them hard to see. Don't hide them under or behind things.
3. Have someone else pretend they are a predator and hunt for the rays.
